Domain Name Issues

Hi. I have several WP sites with you, one of which I have paid for. I changed the domain name for that site to theliterarylibrarian.com, but it still shows up in my dashboard as theliterarylibrariansite.com, which is driving me bonkers, since I did not choose that name for my domain to begin with, it’s the one you assigned to me after I first named my page. In addition, I have another site called Dreams and Worlds, and it’s currently under the domain name of dreamsandworldsbooks.wordpress.com. I have tried to edit the domain name to take off the word, “books,”but it says that dreamsandworlds.wordpress.com is reserved, so I can’t. The Dreams and Worlds site is a sub-site for my Literary Librarian WP. If I COULD, I would love to have the domain for that as dreamsandworlds.com, but I am not sure I want to pay for another domain name. That money could add up quickly. Still, I am annoyed at feeling like I don’t get to choose my domain names, even with the wordpress.com tacked onto the end. Someone already said the last time I was talking about this, that it’s possible I created the domain name I want when I created the site and now it just won’t let me reuse the name I already had? Please help! This is an annoying issue. Thanks

Oh yes, one more thing – I have two sites that I changed the name and the address on, and that transferred the new name and address to a new site instead of just overwriting them, and left the old info in the dashboard, which I have clicked on, and they show up as unbuilt sites, so I have marked them hidden in my dashboard. I would LOVE to see those removed, as I am never going to use those again. The two I have hidden, that is.

Oh yes, and the blog I need help with is NOT amarineravenwood.wordpress.com, regarding my original post here. It’s dreamsandworldsbooks.wordpress.com. Thank you.

  • Do you see theliterarylibrariansite.com or theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com on your dashboard?

theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com is the underlying domain name for theliterarylibrarian.com site. What do you see at https://wordpress.com/sites page?

dreamsandworlds.wordpress.com is being used by someone so you can’t use it. If dreamsandworlds.com is available then you can pay for it and use for your dreamsandworldsbooks.wordpress.com site. See the instructions for registering a new domain name at https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/ page.

  • To delete your unwanted sites:

    1. Go to My Sites → Switch site to select the site you want to delete.
    2. Visit your site’s settings page by clicking on My Sites → Settings.
    3. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page, and select Delete Site.
    4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

The detailed process is available at https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/ page.

Ok. The url for the dashboard for that site is https://theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/. In the dashboard, under the My Blogs tab, it shows the blog address for the Literary Librarian blog as being theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com. When in visitor view, though, the url is just theliterarylibrarian.com. Thanks for your help in deleting sites.

  • As I said theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com is the underlying domain name for theliterarylibrarian.com site. So nothing alarming here.

    Hi amarineravenwood,

under the My Blogs tab, it shows the blog address for the Literary Librarian blog as being theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com.

That’s correct. theliterarylibrariansite.wordpress.com is your free WordPress.com address. You will always have this address but you can choose to display a custom domain in your browser’s address bar instead — which is what you did when you registered theliterarylibrarian.com and set it as the primary domain for your site.

it says that dreamsandworlds.wordpress.com is reserved, so I can’t

As akumarjain mentioned, dreamsandworlds.wordpress.com is already being used by someone else so it won’t be possible to change the name of your site to that exact address.

Thanks for your help in deleting sites.

Just so you are aware, deleting a site is permanent and it won’t be possible to reuse the WordPress.com address. Only delete a site if you are sure you won’t need it again in the future.

Please let me know if anything is unclear.
