  Do I have to buy the Professional package to you my own (existing) domain name?

  Hi,

  You can use any of the WordPress.com upgraded plans to map a domain that you already own. You can read all about the plans to figure out which one is right for you here:

  Hi there,

  You can use any of our plans to add a domain, not just the Premium Plan. If you want to use the cheaper Personal Plan instead, first go to My Site ->Plans and add the plan there. Then follow the mapping instructions @rossviviano gave you above.
