Domain name mapping

Can you register a domain name and then use a different name for your business?

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure I understand. Are you saying can you register your domain with a certain name and then make the title of the site completely different than the domain name? If so, definitely. However, please let me know if I am understanding correctly.

    Thanks,

Yes, you are right. For example, if I want my website to be ‘pepitabulloch.com’ but I can’t get that domain name and can only get ‘pepitabulloch123.com.au’
can I still market my business as having the address ‘pepitabulloch.com’ and then map any links coming from my marketing material to the correct address ‘pepitabulloch123.com.au’?

I don’t want to ‘steal’ traffic from the other domain name, but I don’t want the name of my business to be limited to the available domain name. I have checked with the business that owns the domain name that I want and it operates a very different business to a different market in a different country.

I notice WordPress has a pop up that tells me it can’t host .com.au websites, only .com, but I’m sure that’s not true.

    Please advise. Thank you.

  • It’s important that you only market a domain you actually own and have built a website on.

It sounds like you may have a business in Australia, which is required to use .com.au on business website domains.

Three other points I need to make.

You can host your site here with us, but we do not sell domains ending in .com.au – you would need to purchase that domain from somewhere else and then connect it to a site you build here.

Other registrars do sell .com.au domains. GoDaddy.com does, for example.

Lastly, when I search GoDaddy.com to see if “pepitabulloch.com.au” is available for purchase, I see that it is for sale.
