Domain Name not available

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

I canceled my premium plan and I asked for for my domain name gracedelahunt.com deactivation yesterday. I was told by one of your customer support agent on your website chat that my domain name would be finally deactivated and available for subscription with a third party provider within the next 5 days. But I received an e-mail stating that in fact it won’t be 5 days but 15? Please can you explain me as I am a bit confused.
I would like to get this domain name back as soon as possible and subscribe for it with an other server provider. I don’t really understand why is it taking so much time. Plus I bought a theme after cancellation of my premium plan but I can’t use it on the domain name I want. Because theme are sold on yearly subscription, you understand that time is money.
    Thanks!

Looking forward to hearing from you back,

    Regards,

    Hi there!

I am sorry that you are leaving WordPress and going through all this trouble!

When you cancel a domain, you receive an email confirming that you really want to cancel the domain. If you have not yet followed the confirmation steps in the email all is not lost. Before you go any further, please read this support document:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/cancel-domain/

I would like to get this domain name back as soon as possible and subscribe for it with an other server provider. I don’t really understand why is it taking so much time.

In the help document above, you may have seen the part where it talks about pointing the domain to another hosting provider. That would serve the same purpose as canceling the domain and registering it with a different provider.

I bring this up because it would ensure that you get to use the domain without interruption until it becomes available for transfer after the 60 day period has expired. The 60 day waiting period is also mentioned in that document. Since you just registered the domain 2 days ago, you have 58 left to go.

Of course this does require you to maintain a paid plan, but the Personal Plan is fine for this purpose and is much more affordable than the Premium.

Once the 60 day period has completed, you simply follow the directions in:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
to transfer the domain to your new provider!

    Hope this helps

  • Hi –

Typically, when newly registered domains are cancelled within a few days they will then become available about 5 days after the cancellation processes.

You can certainly try to register this domain at your new provider until you are successful.

The other option, as Dave has mentioned, is to keep the domain registered through WordPress.com and point it to your new site via name server changes. It sounds a lot more complicated and scary than it really is. After your domain has been registered for 60 days you can transfer it outright to another domain provider and will no longer need WordPress.com. Let me know asap if you want to go this route because I need to contact our domain partner about the registration.
