Domain Name Ownership
-
If WordPress registers a domain name for a blog at the bloggers request – who then legally owns the new domain name ?
Thanks.

The person who registers and pays for the domain name owns it, provided they keep renewing it prior to expiry every year.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
So even though WordPress registers the domain name on behalf of the blogger – it’s the blogger that legally owns the name ?

“…when you use a proxy registration on your domain name, the proxy company becomes the legal owner of the domain. They’ll essentially be giving you license to use it, but you won’t actually own the domain”

Perhaps WordPress staff can help out with this query:

One important thin you should know is that when you use a proxy registration on your domain name, the proxy company becomes the legal owner of the domain. They’ll essentially be giving you license to use it, but you won’t actually own the domain.
That is bullsh*t. The person who wrote that post has no idea what they’re talking about.

@stockmarket618: if you paid for the domain registration (including the private registration) here on WordPress.com, you own it. We may be managing it on your behalf, but the domain will be yours.

jenia,
Thanks for your response but I wish it could have been sooner.
BTW, searches for ‘domain name’ still do not show this thread.
Why is that please ?

Because the search box here doesn’t work well. To find threads in this forum I always use Google
Searchterm site:en.forums.wordpress.com
That always gives me good results for the search term.
