Domain name ownership

    If I register a domain name via WordPress, will it be registered in my own personal name? i.e. do I actually own the domain name and can transfer away from WP at any time? I am considering registering with my previous registrar and domain map, albeit at additional cost if I cannot be assured of legal ownership

    You own a custom domain wherever you buy it from (as long as you continue to renew payment for the domain when requested). You can transfer a domain when you’ve owned it for at least 60 days. That rule also applies everywhere. If you wish to build a site here at WordPress.com I’d consider the process more straightforward if you registered the domain here too rather than deal with two different companies. A custom domain is include free for the first year when purchasing an annual plan.
