Domain Name Ownership and Renewal

Hello, I won’t be able to renew my domain name which is up the first week of April. I will be renewing it Mid-May, but am confused because I thought we owned the domain name not wordpress????
How can I purchase the domain name forever and map it onto wordpress.com?

Also is there a way I can have you guys put a hold on my domain name for a month?

domain names are available on contract basis and they will always be available on yearly contract but your domain will be reserved

Please disregard that incorrect answer above. Your domain is not “reserved” and there is no such thing as WordPress.com “holding your domain for a month”. You own your domain name only for as long as you continue to renew it. If you fail to renew it before the expiry date then you no longer own it – the regisrtar owns it, as the domain is in redemption. I think you will benefit from what you read in this domain name expiration article. -

All registrars, including WordPress.COM will let you renew early before a domain registration expires. As noted in the article @timethief references many bad things can happen if you let the domain registration expire.Many people I know renew ahead (I do also) this is done as a safety precaution and remembering to renew annually can be a bit of a drag, and sometimes online things can have a problem so renewing early is peace of mind.
You don’t need to map a domain name to a blog, names can be just held while you get your bog ready to go.

I think I am two years ahead on the domain name registration and I just sent in a check for three more years (my domain name is registered through my ISP and original host, costs me a bit more than some other places but I support a local business) – the domain mapping is over a year out – the no ads upgrade is done annually – so the net end is if I mess things up – the site works for a while and the worst that happens is I get the junk ads back on my site – but the site keeps working as I want.
