Domain name payments

I got my domain name from Microsoft, when they had a website builder. Later I had it moved to WordPress and pay them to map my domain. When Microsoft stopped doing the website builder, I was contacted by Melbourne IT in Australia and had to pay them for my domain name. Why am I paying 2 lots of people?

  • Hi there,

A domain has two components – registration and hosting.

Registration refers to your ownership of the domain. It sounds like Melbourne IT is your domain registrar, so you’re paying them to own that domain.

Hosting refers to who is providing server space for the files that make up your site. Connecting your domain to a hosting provider is a paid service with most hosts, including us. Hosting itself is free on WordPress.com, but we do charge a fee to connect a domain to a site hosted here. That is the domain mapping upgrade you have on our end.

If you stop paying your registrar your domain will expire, you’ll no longer own it, and the mapping upgrade on our end will stop working as the domain will no longer exist.

I hope this clarifies things for you, but let me know if you have any more questions.
