Domain name question

    Hello,

I am a fairly inexperienced with websites and domains in general. We currently use a free wordpress site for our lab website and are considering getting a paid version to remove ads (likely the personal subscription). As this comes with a free domain name we will likely change the website name.

Is it possible to redirect our old web address with wordpress in the name to whichever new one we choose? Our old web address has been promoted in the past and some of our users may not have the new link right away, thus we want them to be able to enter the old web address and be redirected to the new one.

Thank you for any help you can provide me!

    Hi @relearnlab

Custom domain is like an add-on to your existing wordpress.com site address.

Upgrading won’t affect your previous wordpress.com site address,
your site’s address will be as it is.

Your custom domain and your wordpress.com site address are like two sides of the same coin.

After upgrading when your users try to visit your site using old site address they will automatically be redirected to the new custom domain.

For Example, you own abc.wordpress.com and when you upgrade to personal plan and choose a custom domain abc.com and when your users will try to visit abc.wordpress.com they will be redirected to abc.com.

    I hope this helps you.

Let me know if have any questions further. I’ll be happy to help you
