Domain name – quick question

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello there! I know that this is maybe something I could have found the answer to in the FAQs, but I want to make sure I have the right answer. If I change my domain name (I essentially just need to take out one letter) would my work get lost? And if I do decide to change my domain name, what link should I follow?

    I appreciate your help enormously!!!

The top level domain here is .wordpress.com and all wordpress.com blogs are on sub-domains like http://rbthgt.wordpress.com/ so are you actually referring to purchasing your own domain URL or not?

re: changing a .wordpress.com blog address
We cannot edit any blog URLs. If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so, then you can change the URL by using the guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Be sure to locate the correct page http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png

Changing a URL is a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

    re: mapping domains
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com) see here http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Maybe all you want to do is to change the site title.

The Site title (blog name) and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General … “save changes”.

That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed. Note that the site title (blog name) and blog address URL do not have to be the same but it’s better for SEO (search engine optimization) if they are the same.

re: changing a .wordpress.com blog address

So it is possible, then? I thought when I created it that once I had chosen I could no longer change it…

In regards to “Changing a URL is a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/”

I think this is what pushed me to write in the first place. I only want to make sure that if I change my URL it will not affect the site in ways of lost work. If you could confirm that, that would be great.
In essence, what you said in the above copy and pasted article, though, is more or less that once I change it I can no longer change it back, correct?

    re: mapping domains
I am a bit unsure as to what this is – I apologize, I think I maybe asked you about that without meaning to, although I’m sure this information will come in handy as I want to continue using wordpress moving forward!

    Thank you!!!

I only want to make sure that if I change my URL it will not affect the site in ways of lost work. If you could confirm that, that would be great.

Your work will not be lost but if you do not purchase a site redirect upgrade when you change the URL, then every existing link to the content under the original URLs will be broken in the SERPs (search engine page results) and everywhere on the internet. When anyone clicks the old links they will get a 404 (page not found) error message.

    Please see here again: http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/#instructions-for-changing-your-blog-address

    7. The final option presented on this screen allows you to discard your current address. This option will permanently disable the address and you will not be able to reuse it. Only select this option if you are sure you will not use the address again. If you want to redirect traffic to the new blog, you can keep the address and purchase the Site Redirect upgrade.

Will your work get lost? Yes.

The work stays on the website, but all the links to it and all the search engine rankings are lost, so nobody can find it. It’s like a bran new blog.
