Domain name registered on wordpress.com need mapping?

I want to get a domain name to replace the default myblog.wordpress.com .. if I register with wordpress, would I still need to do the mapping on wordpress?? Thanks.

The domain mapping also needs to be done, no matter where the custom domain name is registered – they are related but not the same

Thanks, auxclass. I’m looking this up on wordpress.com and on this link:
It says “On WordPress.com, you can register a custom domain (for example, yourgroovydomain.com) and use it instead of your blog’s current address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com). Your old address will still work, but we will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one.” So, it sounds to me that if I register a domain through wordpress.com, then I don’t have to do the mapping.. but I just wanted to double check.

Hi again, just to clarify that what I’m asking is whether I would have to purchase the mapping upgrade of $13 from wordpress and do the mapping myself if the domain is registered on wordpress.com. Thanks!

yes you still need the $ 13.- / year – I think that you will be lead through the domain mapping at the time you buy the domain name – Total cost $ 18.- / year for registration & mapping
The total cost shows on this page at the top: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
They have changed some of the support documents of recent and in a couple of cases not so much for the better

You said “Total cost $ 18.- / year for registration & mapping ” So, the $18 includes the purchase of the domain PLUS the mapping?
Under “Getting Started” on that link, it says
Map an existing domain (one you already own) to your WordPress.com blog – if you already have a domain that you registered and purchased elsewhere.
So it sounds to me that you need to pay the $13 if the domain’s registered elsewhere…

Registration here is $ 5.- / yr Domain mapping no matter where a name is registered is $ 13.- / year – Total $ 18.- / yr if you register a domain here & map it.
