Domain Name Registration
-
Hello,
I’ve created a blog on wordpress.com. Current URL is: adequatecontent.wordpress.com
I want to upgrade it to adequatecontent.com but from GoDaddy. And adequatecontent.com is also available there.
Can i buy this domain from GoDaddy and put it on another hosting outside wordpress.com?
And if yes, then how can i proceed?
I’m new to this so please help me regarding this.
Thank you in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You could purchase a domain through WordPress admin –> Store –> Domains.
The other option is to buy the domain on Godaddy and then setup domain mapping:

Thanks for your reply. But i don’t want to buy it from WordPress. I want to buy it from GoDaddy. And i think domain mapping is for hosting domain on WordPress.com.
But i don’t want to host it on wordpress.com. I want to host it outside wordpress. I want to ask is that if i buy adequatecontent.com from GoDaddy, then is the current URL adequatecontent.wordpress.com will be removed automatically or not?
Is it will be treated as another site?

If you want to buy a URL from Godaddy and host your blog on Godaddy, then it’s not a matter we can help you with. Go for it, but you’re on your own. Nothing whatsoever will happen to your WP.com blog. They are completely independent.

If you want to change adequatecontent.wordpress.com to adequatecontent.com when someone visits your blog – then that is Domain Mapping and your are hosted on WordPress.COM and bound by the Terms of service here – it does not matter where adequatecontent.com is registered – you would still be hosted on WordPress.COM
You can set up adequatecontent.com on Godaddy or Blue Host etc if you want, that would be a WordPress.ORG install and you would need to get support from WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you would be using.

Then adequatecontent.wordpress.com will also remain live on the internet, right?
Yes. You can keep it going, set it to Private, or permanently delete it. Whatever you want.
