domain name registration after canceling account

  Who or what controls the registered domain name after a newly created account is canceled and a refund is granted? I registered a domain name using the wordpress value bundle, but then opted for a refund. A whois lookup shows the domain is registered with Wild West Domains. I contacted them and they said they have no control over the domain name and that I’d have to contact wordpress.

  Once a domain name is canceled it takes a while to revert back to the wild – the timing is controlled by the registrar that WordPress.COM uses and I think there might be some internet regulations and standard practices.

  Also there is no guarantee that the name will be released or that a squatter will not grab the domain name and hold it hostage for ransom.
