Domain name switch

Hello! I am a new developer working on a non-profit website. The website domain is currently on Wix, but will be switching to hosting with HostGator and using WordPress as the web builder. My question is how do I set this up with WordPress since it prompts me to set up my domain with WordPress instead of HostGator like I want?

There are two versions of WordPress. One is WordPress.com and other is WordPress.org

Hosting is taken care for sites which are built using WordPress.com and you can concentrate on customization part forgetting about technicality of hosting.
But if you have Domain elsewhere then WordPress.com allows you to transfer or map it here.
