Domain name transfer

  We are redesigning our site on WordPress. We will be buying a paid package. Obviously out domain name is in use on our current site. How can I go about developing the new WordPress site using our domain but leave it on our existing site until we’re ready to launch the new site?

  Create a free site with a .wordpress.com subdomain address. When you’re ready you can upgrade to a paid plan to map or transfer your domain to that site.

  Thank you for your answer but if we do that, wouldn’t we then have to go back and update all the links on the new site after the transfer?

  Hi there,

  That won’t be necessary, no.

  When you add your own domain on the site, the free WordPress.com address doesn’t disappear. It’s just hidden, and automatically redirected to the new domain you added. So any existing links using the free WordPress.com address will still work, and automatically take visitors to the corresponding page on your custom domain.
