domain name transfer from GoDaddy is wrong name

I unlocked my GoDaddy domain ‘everydaybiochemistry.com’ and transferred it to WordPress, but it shows the name as ‘everdaybiochemistrycom’ not ‘everydaybiochemistry.’ I don’t want to have a WordPress domain with ‘com’ in the name. How do I correct this?

  • Hi there, I’m not seeing a transfer or a plan for that site, but there’s an easy fix! If you want to get the new site up and going right away, I recommend mapping first:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Then you can initiate the transfer once the domain is here. You will need a paid plan to hide the .wordpress.com address, but any of these will do:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing

Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.

  • Wait, I checked your store admin and I see you did upgrade start a transfer there…

Are you still able to change the name servers to point here?
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

If so we can map the domain now while the transfer is processing.

  • Just following up on this again, I can see the transfer is still in progress and the domain still points to the old site. As soon as the domain arrives here, you can go to My site > Manage > Domains and opt to point the domain to our name servers. Then (as soon as your internet connection has a chance to forget the old settings — usually a few hours) you’ll see the domain with the new site.

Okay thanks for the follow up. I bought the Premium annual package.

Yes, I am still a bit confused about how to get my domain I own “everydaybiochemistry.com” to point to my wordpress hosted website so that followers only see “everydaybiochemistry.com” as the url they are using. This is important because there is an outdated website I noticed with the name:

    https://everydaybiochemistry.wordpress.com/

I want to be sure that my domain is unique using “everydaybiochemistry.com” as the address. You mention pointing my web address to the WordPress address, which makes sense.

  • The domain is still with GoDaddy, but mapped to your WordPress.com site.

However, the name servers are not directed to WordPress.com, so you’ll need to take care of that through GoDaddy: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

hmm, so I thought that the domain name will transfer to WordPress so that it no longer resides with GoDaddy, however, that takes time to transfer? Once it is transferred, then I would not need to “direct” it to WordPress because it will be hosted at WordPress?

What am I missing here besides the $18 transfer fee I paid and the steps I went through with GoDaddy to get it unlocked with an access code to facilitate the transfer? I thought once the transfer takes place, I am done with GoDaddy?

  • You are done with GoDaddy when the transfer finishes, and you are right, I do see a pending transfer started 2 days ago.

These things can take up to a week, and about 98% of that time is from GoDaddy’s end.

Since the domain is mid-transfer, you won’t be able to change its name serves until the transfer finishes.

    perfect answer, thanks MacManX.

I will be patient and then work in earnest on setting up my site at WordPress once the transfer is complete.

okay, the domain has now been transferred from GoDaddy to WordPress, so I think that is what I needed. However, now I am confused about what to do next so that my url is only everydaybiochemistry.com and not everydaybiochemistrycom.wordpress.com?

I got to the window about choosing the domain and selected wordpress, but now it seems I am not able to use the simpler url. What do I need to do to use my domain name I own of “everydaybiochemistry.com” ???

  • Unknown's avatar

hmmm, maybe it is working now. I clicked on something and it seems to go to the simpler url. If you can, please check to see if it is set up correctly.

I have not launched the site yet because I am still figuring out how to build it the way I want/need. I may have to start over with a clean theme as I may have broken the link between the blog post and the home page recent posts.

    Thanks!

    Another question.

Why does the search title say “Ads Blocked” in a Google search for my site? Can I have it say something else, like “Everyday Biochemistry” ??

  • https://everydaybiochemistry.com is definitely working now.

As for seeing “Ads Blocked” in Google, I’m not sure what you mean.

Would you please use https://snipboard.io to share a screenshot of what you’re referring to?

hmm, I tried to use that app but get failed to upload image.

not sure why the image does not upload?

I am using a Mac, is that a problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

here is a text copy paste from the Google search return:

    Ads are blocked
    everydaybiochemistry.com

Try to search with Google directly with the url, not in the address window:

    “everydaybiochemistry.com”

the first hit is “Ads are blocked”

  • This is what I get: https://d.pr/i/XUMwnL

Maybe you have a browser extension or add-on, probably an ad blocker, that’s adding that?

    hmm, okay, thanks.

Strange that you don’t get my website when you search for it. Could that be because it was just launched and it is not yet in the Google universe?

  • Google primarily operates on a filter bubble, it tries to show you what you want to see first, based on your past searches and all the info it gets from advertisers and trackers.

So, no one page of Google results is ever the same for other people. :)

Here’s a fun study on that if you’re interested: https://spreadprivacy.com/google-filter-bubble-study/
