Domain name transfer to WP or Map domain name

  I am making an attempt to set up a new website for our church using WP, and being asked to do one or other of the above. I don’t want to transfer the domain name at this stage, as I need the current website to remain operational while I prepare a new one. Do I have to map it? Will that not interfere with the operation of our current website. Many thanks. Lewis

  Hi Lewis,

  I think the best solution is to create a new website here by using the Free plan first. So it will not interfere with your current website.

  You could start a new WordPress.com from a scratch here: https://wordpress.com/start

  When the website that you are creating here is ready, you can go ahead to domain mapping it, you could follow the instructions here:
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

  Please note if you want to map a custom domain, you would need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site (such as a Personal, Premium or Business plan, etc.)

  Hi thanks for that.
  When I tried it kept taking me back to my account and demanding domain mapping. I closed the account and tried to use Free plan through the link /start, had to set up account again and same thing I can’t get past step 5 of 6, domain mapping. What am I doing wrong please???

  Hi Lewis,

  In that steps, are you able to choose the Free subdomain like this screenshot below?
  

  Or you choose “Already own a domain”?
