Domain name without domain mapping

    Hello

    I have been a long time user of wordpress.COM. I am about to register a domain name through the “domain mapping upgrade” but before doing this I need an experienced volunteer to help me with some information.
    Here it goes: I want my new domain to ONLY redirect people to the home page of my blog, I do not want all my posts’ urls to be changed (I am aware that they can be changed without me losing traffic, I just do not want them to change at all). To make myself clearer, I want to buy “mynewdomain.org” and I would like anyone clicking on that link to be redirected to “myolddomain.wordpress.com” only. I do not want all my blog posts to become “mynewdomain.org/oldurl.
    I have filled in the form for the upgrade, but I am concerned that if I click on “register domain” at the bottom, the changes will be applied automatically.
    Another cause of concern is that in the Support page it says “Your old address will still work, but we will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one.” (under the FAQ “Register a New Domain”) and I do not want that to happen automatically.
    So here is my question: after clicking on “Register Domain” in the Upgrades tab, will I be given the option of not mapping the whole website to the new address, or not?

    I am not including my actual website address because it is irrelevant to my question.

    What you’re asking is not possible

    Sorry to insist but are you sure? I have done it before with another domain name, and it looks to me that there is no technical reason why it shouldn’t be possible unless wordpress.com has decided to not offer this. But I do know it IS possible. i just do not know if it is possible here, that’s all.
    I am ready to pay for domain mapping if that is a concern, I just don’t want the whole website to be mapped.
    I believe it is called “non-cloaked redirection” or something like that?

    Some domain name registrars offer URL redirection which does not involve a domain name mapping purchase from WordPress.com. Basically the domain name __.com/etc gets redirected to the actual __.wordpress.com/etc address equivalent.

    It’s called “non-cloaked” because it does not hide the actual __.wordpress.com address on the address bar (through a frame for instance).

    In any case, you’d have to verify with your domain name registrar.

    @airodissey : thanks a lot. What you describe is exactly what I want: i.e. a simple redirect which does not hide the original address. When you day I’d have to check with the domain name registrar, do you mean that I need to register my domain name with another registrar than wordpress.com? Or that I should ask them direct then (after March 1st that is)? I have not bought the domain yet but to be honest I would rather buy it from wp.com than from anyone else, even if this means I will need to pay for domain mapping I will not use.

    @timethief : thanks a lot.
