Domain named lapsed, someone bought it. Help!

I have a wordpress.com blog, which I redirected to a domain that I bought through a GoDaddy or some other domain registration site years ago. Somehow let it lapse and someone else bought it, so I can’t get it back without paying extortion. Should/can I just buy, for example, the “.net” version and redirect?
It’s been a long time since I’ve been under the WP hood, so just want to get some advice.

That’s one of the reasons I would never want a custom domain. There is always the chance of losing the domain and even the possibility of impersonation. I guess you could buy the same domain but with a different extension but you’d get visitors possibly ending up at the wrong site with such a similar address. Not great if the domain squatter decided to host malware or pornography there which I have seen happen to others in this situation.
