  I would like to add a domain name without upgrading from the free WordPress package. I don’t seem to get the option NOT to upgrade. Can you help?

  There isn’t an option NOT to upgrade I’m afraid. Adding a custom domain name or mapping a domain you own requires the purchase of an upgraded plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
