  I’v discovered I can’t use a .com.au domain at wordpress. Its asking me if I want to transfer or map an existing domain name.

  However I don’t have an existing domain name. Can I get straight into building my site without a domain name. If not, there doesn’t seem to be an option for purchasing a new domain name….

  Yes, you can definitely set up the site on a free address. Pick the free option from the top of https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  You would need to register that .com.au domain with a registrar that provides that option. Then you point it to your WordPress.com account through mapping or a transfer.
