  I will be registering a domain name elsewhere (once the website has been built) but to start building the website with wordpress.com do I just accept their suggested free domain name and then map it later?

  Hi there,

  Yes, you can make a free site with WordPress.com, and then map your domain here but you will need to have an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site such as a Personal, Premium or Business plan, etc. also you will need to add a mapping subscription to your site, you can check the below link for more details:
