I’ve got a free basic wordpress account and I’m looking at changing my domain name to yourbodyperiod.com but it keeps telling me I need to upgrade my plan? My husband doesn’t have an upgraded plan but has been able to get a domain name linked, he said he bought it through wordpress himself.

This appears to be a relatively recent change in pricing. You used to just be able to get a Domain Remapping upgrade but now this is only available through the purchase of a paid plan. Anyone who purchased this upgrade before this changeover can renew the upgrade.

You can definitely get a domain name without upgrading! You’ll start by going to the same section that you would to upgrade, by clicking on “Plan” at the top of your your left-hand My Site sidebar, but then just click on “Domains” up at the top-center of the screen, and you’ll see where you can click “Add Domain” to get your own address without having to upgrade. It will still offer you the upgrade when you go through the process, because the custom domain comes for free with a Premium plan, vs. the annual charge when you’re on a Free plan, but it should still let you complete the process with the Free plan.

This is, quite frankly, hilarious.
you can Add a domain only if you currently have one. anybody trying to purchase or link a new domain to a new wordpress MUST purchase the paid plan for $99
This is apparently because – “Domains are no longer available for purchase or mapping individually. They are included with WordPress.com Premium. This change has been made as we work to offer the best combination of value and performance for users while still offering a completely free product for those who do not wish to purchase any upgrades.”
But if this is the case I am unsure why I am still able to purchase domains singly through the domains area of my administration panel?

My apologies – based on that thread Jason linked (oops, synchronized answers!), it looks like my info may be outdated.
Like Pixlbandits, though, I tried purchasing a single domain through my admin panel as well, and it seemed to let it get as far as submitting payment for the $18/yr domain subscription without prompting me to upgrade. I didn’t try to go any further through the process, because I’m poor and content with my .wordpress.com address, but it looks like it would have let me get it right there with the Free plan.
Maybe they haven’t yet pushed the change through to all accounts that existed before the policy change? I’m not sure either.

The information posted in this thread is correct. Generally, it is not possible to purchase domain registration or mapping as an individual upgrade. There are some user accounts that are grandfathered into the old pricing structure at the moment, so that may be causing the confusion.
