Will the domain name I buy always have to contain wordpress.com in the URL? if so, what is the minimum plan in which this can be skipped? In this regard, is wordpress.org better than wordpress.com?

A domain with wordpress.com in the URL is standard for the Free Plan. The minimum paid Plan in which you can have a self-styled URL is the Personal Plan that starts at $5 per month, billed annually. With WordPress.com you get a Domain Name as well as full email and live chat support with WordPress.com’s award-winning and extremely helpful staff (among many other things) all in one package that’s $8 per month.
With WordPress.org you use the WordPress software, which is open source and free, and you would need to host with a different web host like Bluehost or GoDaddy, etc. They will also charge a monthly fee for hosting and a fee for your domain name, as WordPress.com would. A helpful way to know whether .org or .com may be for you is to compare those monthly costs and the benefits you receive.

No, a custom domain (without “.wordpress.com”) can be added with these steps:
is wordpress.org better than wordpress.com?
Both have their advantages :) If you decided to install WordPress.org software with another host, a WordPress.com plan won’t be needed. Hosting is included in our plans so that’s not something you will need to buy separately.
