the underlying.wordpress.com url is the same

Cancellation took place immediately, but still allowed me to play with designing the website -

preservinglifememories.com is not registered with or mapped to WordPress.com. That domain is registered and hosted with GoDaddy and only expires in 2018 according to the Whois data.
If you want to use that domain with your WordPress.com site, http://preservinglifememories.wordpress.com/, you need to add a plan to your site at My site ->Plans. That will allow you to connect your domain using the domain mapping upgrade:
