I am guessing you had a different domain (not universalplatinum.wordpress.com subdomain) in mind?
If you registered it elsewhere (not on WordPress.com) – you should be able to use it on your original host without any restrictions.
In fact, the only way you could use a domain that you purchased elsewhere, on WordPress.com is called Domain Mapping.

You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain.
If you tried to use some old domain that you purchased earlier on WordPress.com (and subsequently got rid of it) – that might be more complicated.
After cancellation, there is no guarantee the domain will become available to register somewhere else, and you may not be able to get it back. Keep in mind that you do have the option to keep the domain at WordPress.com, and use it elsewhere, see our alternatives in the below sections.

@associatedmusic can you let us know what domain you have in mind? I can see you used to have one but it expired some time ago. It should be available again now.
