domain not verified not searchable on google

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi Ive registered and verified with google console and set my site to public and still can’t search for it. On goggle search it says the domain is not verified bit surely it’s a worrdpress domain ? Is there any way I can get a site to go public on this platform ? Ive got the free plan so wonder if this is why ? Ive copied the meta tag into the google traffic tab and cannot verify the domain without buying a custom one.

    Please help

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Make sure that you’re following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/site-verification-services/#google-search-console

It can take a bit of time for Google to recognize when the tag has been added, so if Google doesn’t recognize the tag in step 9 initially, I recommend waiting about an hour before trying step 9 again. It’s safe to close your browser during that time if you want to.

Yes I’ve done all these but am unable to verify the domain as it is a wordpress.com free one and does not appear in the list of domains and hence I cannot access the tab to access the TXT file for verification. Please explain how I can do the DNS verification. I assume I would have to pay for a domain first and hence I wonder how free domains can work ?

    Many Thanks

I have verified by URL prefix and added the tag howecer when I look at the drop down list on the domain name it still says UNVERIFIED. I’ve also added a sitemap and requested Indexing so am not what sure what to do next ?

    thanks in advance

  • Hi there,

For a free WordPress.com URL, the only option you can use is the meta-tag method we describe at https://wordpress.com/support/site-verification-services/#google-search-console. DNS verification is only possible if you own a custom domain, like alexhorswoodartist.com, so that’s not what you want in this case.

I checked the verification code you currently have in your dashboard for Search Console, and that’s not a valid meta-tag. It has to look like the example in our support page, starting with <meta name="google-site-verification" content="...

Please check that support link above, and make sure you follow those exact steps. Also make sure that, once you copy the meta tag in Search Console, you don’t close that browser tab. Open your WordPress.com site in a different tab, paste and save the code. Then go back to the original Search Console tab and click the Verify Now button there.

I’ve also added a sitemap and requested Indexing so am not what sure what to do next ?

Your site is set to public, so Google will index it regardless of whether or not you verify it. Verification and submitting a sitemap in Search Console are not requirements for getting your site indexed. It can potentially help speed up the process, but that in itself won’t cause the site to be indexed, and the site will be indexed just fine without it as well.

You made your site public only two weeks ago, but it can take eight to twelve weeks for a new site to be fully indexed by search engines, so there’s nothing unusual about your site not appearing yet. This process takes time.

I also see you haven’t published anything new on the site since 10 January, and you only have static pages, no posts:

Search engines prefer dynamic content (i.e. posts) over static content (i.e. pages), and they also prefer recent content over older content. So posts will always get indexed faster and rank higher in search results than pages.

Additionally, every time you publish a post on a public site, we ping Google and other search engines to pro-actively make them aware of the new content so they can come and index it. But all the content on your site were published while the site was still private, so Google essentially has to discover your site on its own – we’ve never been able to let them know your site exists.

Consider adding a “News” or “Blog” or “Latest updates” section to your site, and start publishing some posts, at least a couple times a week. That’s the quickest way to get your site to start showing up in search results.

Thanks but im sure ive followed those instructions

Can you give me a link to your support page describing this meta tag ? and tell me how to access the verification meta tag on goggle console ?

The instructions above describe copying a verification meta tag to the traffic google tab of the wordpress site. Im totally confused

    Thanks

The example on your have given looks like this :
<meta name=”google-site-verification” content=”rc2RXSkjV5rz9P2s2hTwdDsnwTu4tD-gmruKUrqBGjs” /> which is what ive pasted in

Ive tried following that process again but GSC says my site is auto verified and do not remove the metal tag from the sites home page. It doesnt allow me to go further and get the tag again and go through the process outlined again.

    Please help

Having done all these steps many times only to be told my site is verified and not to move the meta tag Can you please help me ?
I do notice that on inspection in GSC the goggle verification meta tag is non-existant which is not something I can change this end.
Could you please look at this as I’m sure Im not the only person with this problem and its rendering this website unsearchable

    Many Thanks

  • Here you can find complete instructions, but it looks like you’ve already pasted the tag with the correct format.

Were you able to verify the address now?

Yes it says verified and that its indexable etc. Ive started posting blogs – do they need to be on my home page to hopefully speed up indexing ?

  • They don’t need to be on your homepage, no. The important thing is that your site has regular updates. It doesn’t matter where on the site those updates appear.

Keep in mind it will still take a few weeks. Publishing new content regularly speeds up the process, but it doesn’t instantly skip you to the end :)

So for now just focus on your content, and give the search engines time to do their thing. They’ll start showing your content once they’ve finished indexing it.
