Domain Options and Pricing

Hi, I apologize, I’ve read through the various help pages about this topic, but something isn’t clicking for me. I probably am about to sound super dumb, but I gotta ask.

I am using a free account and free domain. What I want to do is just very simply eliminate the .wordpress from my domain.

I was playing around here on WordPress trying to figure out my options. It lets me add the domain and the private registration to my cart for $18 + $8 respectively, so $26/year total. Is it possible to purchase just that? Without upgrading to a paid plan?

I notice that any of the plans [Personal, Business, Premium] all say that the custom domain name is included in the price for free. There are other places where I saw it saying that you can have your custom domain, provided you have a plan.

So this is odd to me, because why would WordPress provide a la carte pricing for registering my domain if it wasn’t possible to have it without a plan. See what I’m saying? In the instance you have to have a plan to have the domain, and a domain is free with a plan, then there would be no reason to show $18/year for buying my domain – right? Am I losing my mind?

If anyone could please clarify this for me, I would really, really appreciate it. Essentially: can I just spend the $26 and that’s it? Or is there more to this?

[On a second note, I also have the same question related to what would happen if I buy my domain via GoDaddy or something, and try to use it here. In some places it says I actually would need the Premium plan to do that. But again, a custom domain is marked as free with a plan. But in the domain cart, it looks like it says $13/year to map it. Argh!]

    THANK YOU!
