Domain owner has taken down wordpress site
-
I’m part of a charity and have found out we don’t own our domain name. It is owned by previous developer who has taken the site down (I know rookie mistake!). I was administrator of the wordpress site and was simply going to transfer the site to another domain name. But wordpress site now down as well. Can domain owner also take down wordpress site even though he is not an administrator? Any help will be appreciated.

Those are the priveleges of a domain owner, he can do with his domain what he likes. If that site was running on the wordpress.com platform, it would fall back on it’s free site. If that site is hosted elsewhere, you must contact the hosting support.

Thank you for your response. I understand he owns the domain name and can do with what he wants, but I’m concerned the WordPress site is also down and I now can’t sign into it. I was hoping to redirect to a new domain name which I have purchased. While he owns the domain name, he is not an administrator of the WordPress site. Any idea why the WordPress site isn’t working? Any help much appreciated

Hi @dorrigoshow!
In addition to what @staartmees mentioned, the domain owner has access to the domain’s DNS settings. If any changes were made to the DNS, it could result in the website becoming inaccessible. There’s also a possibility that the issue lies with the hosting account itself.Since I wasn’t able to locate a WordPress.com account associated with the account you’re contacting us from, I’m unable to confirm these details.
Please also note that it’s possible your site is self-hosted and not hosted on WordPress.com. To learn more about the differences between a self-hosted site and a WordPress.com site, you can visit this link. If the site is self-hosted, you will need to reach out to the hosting provider.
If you have any other questions or need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to let us know. -
