Domain Parked

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

On April 19, I bought domain name “thearchworkshop.com” with the premium plan of WordPress.com.
Wordpress.com does not allow to add new themes, so
I decided to use wordpress.org to create my website, using an other host.
I cancelled my subscription on WordPress.com and deleted the domain name, so that I can buy it from an other website (papaki.gr).

Now , domain name is “parked by automatic” and it is not available.
When will it be available again?

    Thank you,
    Despina.

  • @thearchwork if you cancelled the domain within the first 48 hours, it will be released after about 5 days. After that, it may not be released til its expiration.

Do you want us to try to reactivate it for you? You can point it to a new host. Canceling does not “delete” the domain. It just says you don’t want it anymore.

    Hello
And thank you for your reply!

I didn’t cancel it within the first 48 hours, I did it some days later.

When I tried to transfer the domain, there was the “60 days” limit. So this is why I cancelled it, to do it faster ( I didn’t know that it would be blocked).

If you reactivate it for me, would I be able to transfer it to an other domain name service or i would still need 60 days?
The reason I want to do this, is that wordpress.com does not allow to use other themes, it is more limited than the wordpress.org way.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there,

    Sorry for the delay.

Because you cancelled the domain only after a few days, it will only be released again after it’s expiration date next year. But we can still restore the domain to your account, and then we can help you use it with another hosting provider.

It will be locked for transfer for the first 60 days – this lock applies to all new domains at any domain provider and we don’t have a way of lifting it before that time – but during this 60 day period you can still use the domain somewhere else by pointing it to another service via name servers or IP addresses.

Move Your Domain to Another Host

If you want to restore the domain, please let me know. Also please create a new free WordPress.com site to which I can attach the domain, otherwise you won’t be able to access its settings.

    Hello @kokkieh,

    thank you for your answer.

Ok, I would like to restore the domain, but I have a question.
Will I be able to use the domain from wordpress without having the limit of using only the themes of wordpress.com?
I want to create my site in wordpress (by installing it from wordpress.org) and use an other theme from the internet, not from wordpress.com. This is my problem with the domain from wordpress.com

    Thank you

  • I’ve restored your domain.

You can use that domain with any hosting provider, yes. Once you set up hosting, ask your host for their name servers or their IP address. That information should appear on the screen of their interface where you connect your domain.

Those records you then add to your domain on our end. Click on My Site ->Domains, select your domain, and click on Name Servers and DNS.

    Change Name Servers

Move a Domain Using Custom A Records

Ok, I see that you restored it.

However, I want to add a theme that is not included in wordpress.com.
I still can not see the “add new” button when I go to themes.|

Is that because my domain name is bought from wordpress.com, so i have that restriction? This is why I wanted to buy the domain name from an other service.

  • You need to get hosting with another provider and there install the self-hosted WordPress.org software which will allow you to install custom themes. Then you can point your domain to them, as I explained above.

    Yes, I did that.
I then go to thearchworkshop.com/wp-admin as I should,
then go to Appearance-Themes, and there I can only use wordpress.com themes.
And I have already pointed the domain to them.

    @kokkieh
(sorry I don’t know if I have to write this @ or not)

  • Please clear your browser’s cache, and then try again. It sounds like your browser might still be “remembering” that the domain is connected to WordPress.com, so it’s loading your old site’s dashboard instead of the new site’s.

Ok, problem is solved. Thank you very much!

  • Thanks for letting me know :)
