Domain payment currency
-
Hi.
I used to pay for new Domaon Registration and renewal in dollars. I was then asked to change to GB Pounds. The fee in pounds is now £15 but still only $18.
Can I revert to paying in dollars as this seems to be penalising UK customers? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello!
Our store attempts to charge for products in the currency associated with your credit card whenever possible. Are you paying from an American account?
The price of an upgrade in non-US Dollar currencies are adjusted manually every so often to best reflect foreign taxes and the current exchange rate — it’s not in place as any kind of penalization. But we currently do not have a system that can dynamically change pricing for currency exchanges.

I am in the UK.
A change from £12 to £15 is a huge increase. there have been no changes in UK tax and the exchange rate only varies very slightly.
This is totally unfair on your UK users. As I use Paypal it has nothing to do with credit cards.
If you could change my account from USD to GPB then you can change it back. Please do so. -
Looking at your recent transactions, the last one was in GBP — when the country of the card isn’t available (such as when paying with Paypal) the store displays the currency of your most recent transaction. If that fails (or if its your first transaction) it will also attempt to obtain your location before defaulting to USD.
I don’t have a way to manually switch the store’s pricing to USD instead of GBP. The only thing we set manually is the prices of the products, which were adjusted last week.
If you feel the price of £15 is too high, I completely understand. You can always transfer the domain registration to another registrar and renew with them:
If you do transfer the domain registration, then wish to continue using WordPress.com for hosting, you can map the domain here with the outside domain:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
This will required a Domain Mapping upgrade which costs £11 annually.
You can also transfer your site to self-hosted environment if that’s a better fit for your needs:

I have purchased quite a few upgrades through WordPress.
The last few were in £GBP becuase WordPress switched me to it!
It doesn’t matter what the currency is, it should be the same amount, the same price. $18 is around £12, so the price rise for the UK penalises all your UK customers.
If my last transaction was £12, then the next should be £12.
You haven’t explained the price rise at all. It is 25%, a HUGE increase if you have several upgrades as I do.
Your billing system must be able to switch amounts and revert to £12 or a figure close to the $18 USD. £15 is ridiculous.
Your last few comments amount to: accept the unfair treatment or leave.
Please escalate this issue to Management and advise them that the billing system is penalising all your UK users. -
Hi there!
Your currency is selected based on the country that issues your card.
Our store team analyzed our prices and updated our exchange rates, which hasn’t happened for a while. I’m sorry you’re upset with these changes. I would be happy to refund the difference in cost for your recent renewals. However, I don’t see any renewals that happened recently.
As Alex mentioned, you’re more than welcome to move your domains to another registrar if you feel that our prices aren’t what you want to pay for our services.

Moving is not an option as I have invested a lot of time on my websites and in learning the WordPress system.
There is no way WP can justify an exchange rate 25% higher than it has previously used.
My currency was not selected on the country issuing my card, as I previously paid in USD on that same card. It was changed by WP to GBP and it seems obvious they did this to stop UK customers having access to USD payment and then introduce a huge price hike.
As I asked, I would like this to be escalated to your management so that they register this feedback and review their pricing and marketing.
As a former marketing director myself, I assume they do monitor customer feedback and welcome it. Thank you. I’ve no more to add. -
This change also accounts for VAT, which we weren’t previously doing. You asked to speak with Alex’s manager which is why I’ve stepped in. Your feedback has already been passed along to our store team.
If you need further help, feel free to follow up with me here.

Ah, VAT. That makes perfect sense in the light of new legislation re. internet services.
It took quite a few messages to arrive at that information, so perhaps staff need to be told about the VAT and a message sent to UK clients advising them of the change?
Thanks. -
Sorry about that. I meant to mention it in my original message to you. Lost track of it before hitting reply. :)
I’ll check in with our Store team about an email to UK clients as well.
