Domain pointing to wrong IP Address
-
Hello, community. I’m having an issue trying to map a domain I own away from WordPress.com. Here’s what happened.
I have a domain at Route 53 (AWS). I connected that domain to a WordPress.com site without an issue.
Now I’m mapping it away from WordPress and trying to use it in a self-hosted site. Here’s what I did:- I went to my WordPress.com site and removed the connection.
- In my domain provider’s dashboard, I updated the NameServers to point away from WordPress.
- In my self-hosted server, I did everything I needed to use the domain.
I double-checked my server from end-to-end and there’s nothing wrong there.
You can see in this WHOIS Lookup that the NameServers are pointing to AWS as I expected.
You can see that the new IP Address (34.192.138.105) is propagated as expected. But if you type the URL this page will show up:

Instead of going to the new Address, it’s going to one from WordPress.com (192.0.78.251:443) which returns a 404 status.
Looks like somewhere between request and response, WordPress.com is trying to pull it back to the connection it had before.
I appreciate any insights, maybe there’s something I overlooked.

Never mind, it’s working now. I think I only needed to be patient. I know it can take up to 72 hours to properly propagate, but I got confused because it had been propagated.

These things can take a little time! Generally if your domain is not pointing here either using name servers or using IP addresses then there isn’t really a way for our system to pull it in, so to speak. It can sometimes also be worth clearing your browser cache if it’s still showing you the wrong thing:
https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/As it is, I tried visiting your domain as a brand new visitor now; it’s definitely directed me to a different host than WordPress.com!
