Domain problems – DNS maybe
-
I’m trying to host defthought.com, a domain that I already own, through wordpress.com but it keeps saying that the domain isn’t pointing to WP. I’m not sure what to do, help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you

You need to point the domain name at the worpdress.COM servers and you do that at the place where you registered the domain. and you will also need the domain mapping upgrade.
-
-
Are you mapping to a subdomain? I don’t think you want to set up wordpress under CNAME unless you are going to use a subdomain of your main domain name.
You want the
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comto be the main nameservers if you are not mapping to a subdomain, and you only use the numbered addresses if your registrar requires it.
-
The wordpress nameserver stuff above should replace the existing at your registrar, which according to “whois” are the following
dns1.name-services.com
dns2.name-services.com
dns3.name-services.com
dns4.name-services.com
dns5.name-services.comReplace 1, 2 and 3 with the wordpress nameservers and delete 4 and 5.

I’m not mapping to a subdomain.
My registrar does require that I use the numbered addresses though. Does that mean that those are all I need?
Or should I add the
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comas A addresses as well?
-
I don’t think that the “whois” said is right. My host records have never looked like that.

ns1, 2 and 3 should be A addresses, not CNAME addresses. CNAME’s are for creating alias’s.
DO NOT use a CNAME unless you plan on mapping to a subdomain.
-
ok, but when I try to make them A addresses it has an error and says they must be an IP.
btw thank you so much for all your patience with this, sorry if i’m not getting it.
-
Then just put in the IP numbers as “A” addresses and DO NOT create the CNAMES.
And not a problem. My registrar seems far less complex than yours so I’m learning too.
-
Ok I did that. I guess it’s just a matter of waiting now.
Thanks again for all your help!
