Domain Purchase-worpress-and .com
-
I have read some of the “buying a domain” questions. For SEO purposes, I would rather have my own domain and eliminate the “wordpress” in the URL, so it would be something like ediblemissionsproject.com without the “wordpress.” Is this possible to do and still stay in this platform and use the forums?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can do that by adding your new domain from Upgrades -> Domains in your Dashboard.
The new domain will replace all instances of [blog].wordpress.com in your URL.
See this for more info: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

Thanks and I looked at that. I guess what I am wondering… is the difference between a .com with WordPress that doesn’t allow advertising vs. a .com that does allow advertising. If you could give me an example, I would appreciate it.
-
Well, you can map your .com domain to your WordPress.com blog, but it’s still subject to the same restrictions.
In the other case, you would need a hosting provider (some recommendations http://get.wp.com/hosting/ ) and then install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/
To clear up any confusion, here’s a comparison of WordPress.com and the self-hosted WordPress.org: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The VIP program on WordPress.com for high-traffic and high-profile sites allows you to run custom themes, custom PHP code, ad code, and WordPress plugins.:
I am thinking ahead. I have a service and an upcoming book/ebook sort of product that I would want to sell off my blog. I want to create a website per se that has a blog, and I know that I can achieve that with WordPress. I have read threads on affiliated marketing, advertising, etc. but when it is your own production and product that you design, can’t that be advertised? When does one reach VIP status? And when one reaches that VIP status, what is the limit with using javascript, flash, etc. And finally, I really appreciate the forums here, and I want to keep learning and adding to my knowledge. WordPress.org is not as good with the help one gets here, so I am thinking that with VIP, it might take one to that next level without the headaches and responsibilities of wordpress.org. Please correct me if I am being delusional.
-
You’re welcome to talk about your own product, as long as the blog itself doesn’t turn into nothing but an advertisement for it.
As for VIP hosting, you can signup at any time. It’s like regular self-hosting (so not many restrictions), but directly through us with more bells and whistles.
-
Define “nothing but an advertisement for it.” It is a blog that will be about an ongoing project, so when it is time, it might have a call to action at the end of each post like a quote for a service, for example. This will enable me to get leads. And what if I see an opportunity to place other business’s ads that are relevant to what I am blogging about. Is that appropriate? I would be very picky in who I would allow, of course. And eventually, I will have a product for sale that has to do with what I am blogging about. ARe these acceptable?
-
A call to action at the end of each post would be something I have seen many blogs suspended for. I’m not staff, but I recommend you start with independent hosting, as this will also enable you to use more complicated signup forms and dynamic content. This is essentially a platform for blogging, not online marketing of products and services; it’s not well designed for that at all.

What about the people that sell their music via WordPress? What about the people that offer a service? I am only asking what the boundaries are and what is possible within the realm of WordPress. It is quite confusing to determine with all the information and what people are actually doing. People on WordPress are selling themselves, their product, etc. on their blog. I am not ready to independent host.

I am trying to get clear. If you are an original artist or writer, aren’t you allowed to sell CDs, books, other writing materials, and other merchandise related to your blog from your blog. This is something that only creators are allowed to do, correct?

Here’s the link. Please contact Staff directly by using it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

I offer a service and have my professional site here. But the entire “call to action in every post” thing is a step too far.
If every post contains a “call to action” which is essentially either “get on my mailing list” or “buy my service or product” that is the problem. If the point of the blog is to give you a platform to establish your professional credentials and spread the wisdom you have, fine. If it’s to spread the call to action, that’s when your blog falls into the same category as the hundreds I’ve seen suspended.
And yes, only creators are allowed to offer products on WordPress.com.
I’m just saying it sounds like your ambitions are more than what WordPress.com will normally allow. You can probably save yourself time and angst, and get an easier mailing list developed, with a WordPress.ORG install instead.
-
Okay I understand and I am not sure I want to go as far as using the “call to action” concept. I said it might have a call to action at the end of each post. I am researching all options as I think ahead. It might not be appropriate for me to go that far. In regards to the WordPress.org, I have read many a frustration on the help forums, and I know a couple of people who became very frustrated with getting help. Everyone here is very helpful and I am not ready to fly out of the nest as of yet. If and when I get there, perhaps I can switch over to the .org if I see a need to use the “call to action” concept. Could you please direct me to some WordPress.com blogs that are maximizing thier potential with WordPress.com and offering a service as well as products they created–the sites that are appropriate to the terms of service so I can get a visual.

I can’t do that as I don’t spend my time on any sites that are likely to meet your definition of “maximizing their potential with WordPress.com … and offering a service as well as products they created. I suggest you put this question directly to Staff. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

@ediblemissionproject
Please answer the questions I posed to you in the other thread you posted here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/transfer-other-blog-questions-and-answers-from-forum?replies=13#post-571376 -
Well, I couldn’t say my site is currently optimized, but it’s making me a living:
If you want more suggestions than the one (me!) I know off the top of my head, that is going to cost you my research rate of $85 an hour.
-
Well… thank you for your time all. I assumed that since you are helping others, that you have come across other blogs that are offering a service as well as products they created. Sites that professional in this, so I can see examples of what is allowed. Raincoaster, your site is well done. I have looked at it briefly and I plan on looking at it more. So I appreciate knowing that is a viable site that is offering services, is professional, and is within the guidelines of WordPress.com blogging. If any of you come across others, please let me know as I am a visual person and would like a couple of other examples of sites offering a service, products they created, and fall within the WordPress.com blogging guidelines.
-
As suggested by Timethief, I put the above
(a request of: examples of sites offering a service and or products a blogger created that fall within the WordPress.com blogging guidelines)
as a question directly to staff, and they replied with: “Asking on the forums is probably the best option for finding additional sites like this.” Per the other suggestion above, and unfortunately, I do not have $85 an hour to spend for a visual to gain a deeper understanding. I am trying to totally understand the parameters and boundaries and somehow carve out a living as a single parent with a blog that has integrity and displays professionalism that will ultimately help people. So if anyone out there has seen blogs within Worpress that is selling a service and or products in which the blogger created that are WordPress legal, I would appreciate if you could alert me to them. I am always looking for them, but I don’t view as many blogs as all of you guys and girls do. Thank you again for your help.
