Domain Question
-
Hi!
I have a question about registering domains. If I use a name for a free wordpress.com site (for example ‘ilovecats.wordpress.com’) is that name considered to be ‘taken’ as a domain name? What if I wanted to register ‘ilovecats.com’ as my domain with Google Domains, Namecheap, etc. and then use it with a self-hosted WordPress.com site, or another similar system. Could I do that without it belonging to WordPress in any way, even though I used it first for a free WordPress.com site? Thank you very much!
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hello there,

Yes, the “.wordpress.com” extension is also a domain name.
I will just give you a brief overview of the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
Both (WordPress.com and other hosting providers that use WordPress open-source software such as GoDaddy, HostGator, and Bluehost) can be great options for your website.
WordPress.org is an open-source project that provides WordPress software for free, so you can use it on your own hosting provider.
You are responsible for finding a host (Examples would be Bluehost, GoDaddy, Hostgator, NameCheap, etc.) and for security, backups, and site maintenance. There is no dedicated support for WordPress.org sites outside of the public community forums at WordPress.org/support/forums.
Currently, you are contacting WordPress.com, which is a managed hosting provider for WordPress software. Hosting and security are all included for free, as well as site maintenance and backups.
There is also dedicated 24/7 support for WordPress.com sites provided by community and forum staff via these forums, email, and LiveChat (with a paid plan).
This article explains the differences between the two: https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org
Hope this clarifies things for you! :)

Thank you for your reply!
If I understand you correctly “ilovecats.wordpress.com” and “ilovecats.com” would be considered separate domains. So by using the first one with a free wordpress.com site it would not prevent me from registering the second one with another registrar (Google Domains, Namecheap, etc.) and having it hosted anywhere I choose.
Is that correct? This is my basic question. I’m trying to make sure that the brand name I want to use later as a simple “.com” address wouldn’t be tied down by using it as a free example.wordpress.com site first.
Thank you!
