  I am creating a full website for my business using Squarespace, and I need to change my domain name to there. If I don’t have to transfer the domain to another party, I don’t see the need to do it, but I can’t figure out how to map it to my new site there. Do I have to transfer to a new party or can I continue to carry it through you?

  Hi Barb!

  Using your domain’s DNS settings, you can map your domain to Squarespace without transferring the domain away. :)

  Squarespace has instructions on how to configure the domain’s DNS settings here:

  Follow along with those steps from Squarespace, but using the WordPress settings. Note that you’ll be editing the DNS settings, but not the name servers.

  I am confused. The two instructions seem to contradict each other. Squarespace says to edit the cname but WordPress says to create a new cname. Neither one work because if I try to edit the exist cname, there is no “pencil” when I hover over, but creating a new one says that I do not have permission because it doesn’t match the old cname. So I can’t seem to go any further.

  Hi Barb,

  Sorry for the confusion – that’s partly my fault.

  Squarespace actually has a WordPress.com-specific guide you can find here:

  http://help.squarespace.com/guides/mapping-a-domain-with-wordpress

  It’s slightly better put together, but with one error being that you actually must add the CNAME (not edit), then edit the default A record. Once you edit the default A record, the default CNAME will go away leaving the new custom CNAME.

  Given I caused this little confusion, I’ve taken the liberty of adjusting your DNS records on WordPress to those Squarespace specifications to help ease this out.

  If you’ll follow Step 5 in that guide, the instructions for the Squarespace end, then let me know if you’re not seeing the sites connect correctly in the next 72 hours.
