Domain: redemption period

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

Originally I had my personal website (wangweikun.com) through wordpress.com. But I canceled it few months ago. Now I try to register the domain somewhere else and use wordpress.org.
But the problem is that website is still unavailable. When I checked it through whois.net, it says it’s in redemption period. But it’s in redemption period for over a month.
Can you please check when will the period end?

    Thanks.

    Domain Expiration

  • Hi there,

Expired domains don’t become available immediately, but the registrar can hold on to them all the way until the original expiration date if they choose. This is entirely in their control.

If you want to use a domain somewhere else a better option is to transfer it, as cancelling a domain means you give up ownership, and with that any claim at all, on the domain name.

It might still be possible to restore the domain to our account at this point, and then you can transfer it to a different registrar. But as the domain is now in Redemption our registrar charges an $80 fee for this.

If you want to try and recover the domain, let me know and I’ll email you a link to pay the recovery fee. If we’re unable to restore the domain that fee will be refunded in full.
