Domain redirect costs and plans (inconsistencies)
-
Hi – I’m teaching WordPress.com in schools and at tertiary level. I had confidently advised students that domain name redirect was available but at a cost of $17 (AUD). I have set up a number of WordPress sites and applied a custom URL (from GoDaddy or similar) without being on a plan and it only cost $17. Is it correct that we now need to have a WP plan in order to access the add/redirect domain name facility? Also, according to your Plans, domain names are possible using the Personal Plan but when I try adding a domain it defers straight to Premium. It should only be $17 if I already own a domain let alone the cost of the Personal Plan… and let alone deferring to Premium. What’s this all about and if it’s ambiguous to someone teaching WordPress.com how can I make it ‘easy’ for students?

Hi there,
WordPress.com has stopped providing individual upgrades to new sites as of last year. Everything is now consolidated into plans.
To start a new site with the Personal plan you can visit this link:
https://wordpress.com/start/personal/Each plan gives you one domain credit to either register a new domain or map one that you already own.
Let me know if you need more help :)

Thanks… but what if I’ve set up a free site and want to retrospectively add a domain? WordPress defers to the Premium option ruling out a Personal plan… very cheeky imo. Do I have to set up the Personal plan from scratch meaning I now have to choose a different user/URL option as it will say ‘not available’ if I already have a site or even delete that site.

That’s because you are not selecting a plan first and then entering the domain.
Please go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ to upgrade.
Please see what Staff said here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/custom-domain-89?replies=6#post-2882612
You can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.
Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

Poor form WordPress… Premium shouldn’t be the default when choosing an alternate Domain if the entry point is the Personal plan. It creates the perception for your customers that you’re ripping them off by eliminating ‘choice’. Amendment to that policy advised if you value your users/customers.

It’s just a gltich that Staff will be fixing. Did you use the instructions I provided and succeed or not? If you do not succeed start your own thread by using this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 and type modlook into the sidebar of the new thread.
