Domain redirect & export questions
-
Hello – I sincerely hope you can assist. I’m looking to move to another blog hosting platform (sorry!). I successfully exported by blog to the other platform. The problem I am having is two-fold:
1) If I do a site redirect, what happens when someone who has clicked on a specific post link that has been shared with others (I have several trackback and pingbacks to many posts I have written) and they click on it, what happens? Where do they go? Does it just go to my domain (http://dangoldesq.com) or to that specific post? If the latter, how would that work?
2) I exported everything and it all went into the new blog except for one post! Any idea why? Here’s the post address: http://dangoldesq.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/evernote_vs_springpad/Thank you so much!!
Cheers,

1. As long as your domain has the the same permalink structure, the old link will go to the same post on the new site.
2. I can’t see anything that would have blocked that. Can you try exporting and importing again? If you’re going from WordPress to WordPress, it won’t duplicate imported posts.

staff-blorbo – Thank you so much for responding!! Unfortunately, I tried the export/import several times and it’s the oddest thing. Everything comes over except for that one post! What reasons would you believe would cause this to happen?

I can’t see anything that should stop it from exporting here, and it is in the file. Perhaps the problem is on the other end?
In this case, I’d recommend just copying and pasting it into a new post.

I wish I knew! I just copied/pasted the post/comments. Very bizarre. Last question: how do I know whether the “permalink structure” is the same or not? Thank you!!
-
You can look at the URL of an individual post to see the permalink structure.
For example: example.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/post-title/
Uses this structure: /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

That’s super helpful!! I took a look and here’s what it looks like for both:
WordPress: http://dangoldesq.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/post-title
Blogger: http://www.dangoldesq.com/2011/11/post-titleThe difference obviously is the exact date of publication vs Blogger only putting month & year. Would that mess up the redirect?
Thank you again!!

Yes, unless Blogger has some sort of “best guess” redirects on their end, Site Redirect won’t work for the post URLs.
