Domain redirects even though new site is not up yet

My blog Optional Poetry redirects to the new domain I just got, optionalpoetry.com, even though it won’t be live immediately. I’ve tried to go back and update the primary domain to optionalpoetry.wordpress.com, but even after I click update and receive the message “you have updated the primary domain” it still redirects to the other domain, which isn’t live yet.
I would love people who visit my blog not to be redirected to a missing page for the next few days — how do I change the domain back if the “update primary domain” function isn’t working?

Ok, ten minutes later it is no longer redirecting — phew! How long does it typically take for a new domain to go live?

The new domain was loading fine yesterday, but now it isn’t. I switched back to the wordpress.com domain but now my posts aren’t showing up in my reader.
What is going on and how do I fix it????????

I bought a site .com but never set it up . I have 4 blogs on WordPress but this site has nothing. companions for elders.com how do I get a theme? etc.
