Domain rediretion of highlandparklawnbowling.ca
-
We own this domain via whois.com who contract with SupportNation.com for services. Support Nation has attempted on our behalf to forward highlandparklawnbowling.ca (henceforth hblb.ca to save typing) to highlandparklbc.wordpress.com. However this does not work. Support Nation claims it does but clearing browser caches and many other efforts by many of our non-techie senior members now fail to access our website. Requests for get an error message while and http://www.hplb.ca> work. Support Nation says they can’t install SSL on the source URL. We are a small community club and had to drop our C$120 Premium WordPress plan to the free plan because of the loss of revenue due to Covid. But now our members cannot access our website via their bookmarks for hblb.ca. Support Nation is incapable of explaining why what they did doesn’t work. Is this by any chance a problem at the WordPress end? Do we have to upgrade to a Personal plan to redirect a domain we own to a free WordPress account? I’m tempted to transfer our domain registration to WordPress but am afraid the situation will get even worse and we will not be able to communicate our new Covid schedules because of technical issues neither I nor our members who don’t have degrees in computer science understand!

Since we only have a free WordPress account we cannot access help from WordPress and this “help” feature does not allow the use of email addresses. We can’t even be sure that by upgrading and paying this collapse of service will get resolved. You can’t imagine how frustrating this has been trying to get help from people who cannot communicate in plain English to amateur web “masters”. My email address is bthomson at web dot ca or highlandparklawnbowl at gmail dot com.

Hi there Bob,
I understand your frustration but want to see if we can assist you with this. So, in order for highlandparklawnbowling.ca to work with your WordPress.com site, you will need to either map or transfer it here, as it appears you have attempted. However, both of those options require the purchase of a paid plan: http://wordpress.com/plans
I would recommend the personal plan since it is the least expensive plan that will allow you to have a custom domain attached to your site.
The other option is to transfer your domain over to be registered with us and have a domain-only subscription without the need for a paid plan. The downside to this option is that highlandparklawnbowling.ca will forward to https://highlandparklbc.wordpress.com/ whenever someone types it in – if that isn’t a big deal, that may be a good option as you will only have to pay for the domain registration.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!

Thanks. I haven’t been able to find info on transferring to a domain only subscription with WordPress within my WordPress free account. How do I do this?

I’ve purchased a WordPress Personal plan and would like to get <highlandparklawnbowling.ca> transferred to it just as the cancelled Premium plan did. But I can’t find any way to do this. I have changed the name servers at whois.com to ns1.wordpress.com etc. but that isn’t working. Perhaps because it takes time to propagate on the internet or possibly because the help contractor for whois.com says they can’t install SSL for that domain.

To only transfer the domain without a paid plan, please follow the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
Please keep in mind though you will need a paid plan to set this as your site’s primary domain: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address

We have a paid Personal plan and wish to point the domain we own <highlandparklawnbowling.ca> to <highlandparklbc.wordpress.com> and don’t care if the latter is seen on one’s browser vs the former.
Can anyone provide a straightforward step by step way to do this?
This is the most frustrating experience. We had a Premium plan that worked just fine but had to cancel it because our small community lawn bowling club of mainly seniors has reduced income due to Covid restrictions. We tried a free plan but our domain registrar is unable to or refuses to help do this. I have just paid for a WordPress Personal paid plan hoping to get around this. I have changed the name servers at our domain name server site to ns1(etc).wordpress.com and still nothing works. I do not have a degree in computer science but am nevertheless quite familiar with both web site design and maintenance and have several independent web site on WordPress which have their own domain names separate from WordPress. I am prepared to transfer this domain name to WordPress but can get no help from WordPress to do this, despite them saying we can either use our domain or transfer it to them. It worked with the Premium plan but despite indications that the same “priviledge” applies to a cheaper Personal plan, I have not been able to get either help or advice on how to do something that we know worked before.HELP!

Hi Bob, I’ve got good news for you. :)
I see that you had domain mapping but cancelled it (along with your Premium plan) and while you have purhased the Personal plan, mapping is not yet set up.
However, I was able to restore the previous domain mapping on this end, so you are all set. I can also see that your .ca domain is using the correct WordPress.com name servers. You are correct that there is a delay for propagation but enough time has passed, and I now see the correct settings.
If you visit https://highlandparklawnbowling.ca/ you should now be redirected to https://highlandparklbc.wordpress.com/
To set highlandparklawnbowling.ca as the “primary address” for your site so it no longer uses the wordpress.com address, please go here: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/highlandparklbc.wordpress.com
Once you are there, click on the “change primary domain” button on the upper right, and then pick highlandparklawnbowling.ca as the new address for your site.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
