Domain "registered with external provider"

  • Unknown's avatar

If i did not register it, does the “registered with external provider” means someone else owns my domain?

Why did the wordpress told me it was available then?

I created an account with wordpress and choose the domain i wanted. Since it was a free plan first the domain ended with .wordpress.com

I paid for the business plan to remove the “.wordpress”.

But now it says that that my domain is externally registered but i did not register that. I thought that it was still available and wanted to use this domain to the “free domain” in my plan.

If so, how can i claim my “free” domain then? I tried to add a new domain but everything has a price and leads me to the checkout.

Why did they gave me “false hopes” that the domain was available? Was i wrong? When I search that domain on other platforms such as namecheap, 123 reg they have that domain for sale so it seems that its available? Im so confused but the wordpress “happiness manager” cannot be contacted. Help.

  • Good Morning –

Thanks for writing to us. I’m happy to help you get this sorted. Looking at the account I can see that you connected thebathroomdoctor.com. Is this the domain you wish to use for the site?

  • Hello there,

It is possible to use the domain that is registered with another provider. In order to do this, you would need to follow these instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

Connecting a domain is free to do with all plans on WordPress.com.

I hope this helps so far.

Clarification, I can’t change the DNS because we did not purchase that domain to other domain providers. I looked it up using the ICANN and saw that it was registered through namebright, we did not register that so we cant log in to that platform since we don’t have an account.

It says there that the domain is up for sale for more than $1000 .

    Domain “registered with external provider”

You can’t register transfer or connect an existing domain you don’t own to a WordPress.com site. You’ll need to choose a different domain address to use with a paid plan here.

  • Hi, @themagicrobot is correct. You must select a different domain to register, as that domain is already taken.

If you want to use that domain, you’ll have to purchase it from HugeDomains/NameBright.

That’s what i thought :( if someone else owns it why did the wordpress allowed it to be used with the “.wordpress” then?

Also can you lead me to the link on where I can change the domain without buying a new one?

The free from my business plan technically hasn’t been “claimed” yet. If I try to add a domain it leads me to a checkout page.

  • Hi there –

The domain does not need to match your .wordpress.com site address. These are similar, but 2 different things. For example, mysite.wordpress.com is an example of a subdomain, also called a free site. When you are on a free hosting plan that’s what you have to use. Upgraded hosting plans can register a custom domain like what you’re after to improve SEO and brand appearance for their project or business. When you have a custom domain the sub domain or .wordpress.com version is only visible from your WordPress.com account in our system and it’s not visible to folks visiting your site in any way. I hope this is helpful and not more confusing. While something like mysite.com might not be available, mysite.wordpress.com could be available as they are different.

This page might be helpful: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/

Looking at your account I can see that thebathroomdoctor.com has been disconnected from your domain credit, which is part of your upgraded business hosting plan. You should be able to register a domain as part of your plan at no additional cost through this link: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/thebathroomdoctor.wpcomstaging.com

Click on the “search for domain” box and you’ll be able to register it directly through our system and as part of your plan now.

It might be helpful to put thebathroomdoctor in the search box to see what similar options are available. You can also add a city or location to make the domain more customized to the geographic area that you’re working in which will also help you with SEO.

Keep writing back with more questions. We are happy to help.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I tried that and picked another domain but it lead me to the checkout. The domain I choose went to my cart and was not free as you mention. I can’t send the screenshot through this so I cant show you. But can you send a walkthrough of the whole process? Also why is the “happiness engineer” always unavailable? Thanks a lot.

The domain I choose went to my cart and was not free as you mention.

The domain is free for the first year with a paid plan. Or you can just buy a domain if you don’t want a plan and intend to point the domain elsewhere. You do have to pay something . With a paid plan in year two you would pay to renew your plan and also pay an extra charge to renew the custom domain name.
