domain registration

Nothing personal WordPress, but at $17 per year for registering a domain name that I can register elsewhere for $9.95 per year, I have a question. If I register my WordPress blog domain name as a .com elsewhere, can I convert my existing blog to a .com on WordPress? May be a silly question, but better to ask.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The domain mapping charge here includes the domain name. The cost here is a lowball figure because you are getting a domain name for less than what the going rate is.

Yes you can register a domain name somehere else. Then if you want to map that existing domain you buy somethere else to your free hostedWordpress.com blog, you will have to pay for WordPress.com for domain mapping every year, and you will pay for the domain name you purchase elsewhere every year too.

So for clarity if you want to spend $9.95 on a domain name your purchase elswhere (every year) and then pay WordPress.com a $12. (every year) year to domain map it to your free hosted WordPress.com blog you can do that.
    Total = $21.95

However, purchasing the domain mapping upgrade which includes the domain name from WordPress.com for $17.(every year) costs less.
    Total = $17.00

Domain registration is $ 5.– Add Domain Mapping or Private Registration if you want.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a better understanding now. So if I go with the domain on WordPress, is it an easy switch? Should I also consider VIP. I have to be honest, reading some of the techy stuff is not so easy for me. I’m old. lol I like simple and uncomplicated details. What can I do. lol

I guess I meant WordPress Pro, in the previous post.

Why do you feel your need to have a domain at all? You have free hosted blog and nothing changes except the domain name, you can’ t have plugins and advertising so why do you want to do this? If you state exactly what your plan is we can provide better advice.

Mostly, I suppose, for the shorter domain name. Can;t count the number of times I have wanted to give the domain name to someone and cursed at the length of it. lol I also might consider upgrading to Pro, if it has any real advantages

  • Unknown's avatar

I would add to that the fact that I have no desire to see the domain name taken by someone with a different motive.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s a good reason and I’s go with the domain mapping upgrade if I were you.

Why do you think you need to spend more money on a pro upgrade? (I’m keeping the fact this is an orphanage site in mind.)

The bundle includes these upgrades, which can all be separately purchased: Currently the $99 Value Bundle includes a 1 year subscription to:
    Domain Name & Mapping
    Space Upgrade
    No Ads
    Custom Design
    VideoPress

    1. Do you need a space upgrade? http://en.support.wordpress.com/space-upgrade/
Every WordPress.com blog comes with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. The Space Upgrade gives you an additional 10, 25, 50, 100, or 200 gigabytes of storage space, and allows you to upload music in addition to images. You cannot upload audio files or music without the space upgrade.

    2. Do you need a No Ads upgrade? http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/
WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade. Many bloggers do not know there is advertising running because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all.

    3. Do you need a Custom Design upgrade?
We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM, we are limited to the themes found in the dashboard under Appearance > Themes. If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

    4. Do you need a videopress upgrade?
Wordpress.com currently supports embedding videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, DailyMotion, Viddler, Blip.tv, TED Talks, and Videolog. Vodpod a try, as it allows us to embed videos from thousands of different sites and services. No upgrade is required for embedding the foregoing videos into free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

The VideoPress upgrade allows you to upload videos from your own computer for hosting and playback directly within your blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/

Good info. Thanks. You have been very helpful. Clearly I can see that I do not need the Pro version and can just add what I really need or want. I think I will go with the domain mapping upgrade. So, does that just automatically change the domain and I do not need to do anything else?

  • Unknown's avatar

You do need to set the new domain as Primary. After that, you just carry on as usual.

  • Unknown's avatar

And I assume that I do than on the control panel. Seems easy enough. Thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

One more question. If someone clicks on a link to the free blog, there are some out there, will they be automatically directed to the new domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is a process you must follow to purchase the upgrade and Register a new domain through WordPress.com.
    http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/
and there are instructions to follow to Update Primary Domain
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/#instructions-for-registering-a-new-domain-for-your-blog
Once you have completed all the steps it can take up to 72 hours (but rarely does) for the domain name to propagate throughout the internet.

When we purchase domain mapping all the URLs from the .wordpress.com root blog when clicked anywhere on the interent will seamlessly redirect to the same content in the post under the new domain URLs.

Your visitors will see the domain URLs and on the Admin side of the blog you will see the .wordpress.com root blog URLs – that’s normal.

The pagerank and authority the blog earned was earned by the .wordpress.com URLs and belongs to them. It’s not transferable and the domain starts from zero. In about 4 – 6 months time the content will all be re-indexed by search engines under the domain URLs. Then, all things being equal, the blog will probably have the same pagerank and authority it had prior to purchasing domain mapping.

Your domain is yours provided you do not allow it to expire. If it is not renewed and expires you no longer own it the registrar owns it.

If you do not renew your domain mapping upgrade the blog reverts to the old .wordpress.com URLs. All those domain URL’s will be broken. When clicked they will produce “404 (page not found)” error messages. Those broken links will be there for months (3 – 6 months) all over the interent, until the search engines like Google index them all again under the .wordpress.com URLs, and clear their caches of all the broken domain URLs.

Whew! I hope that covers everything. Best wishes with your blog. :)
