Domain Registration and Mapping
-
i am designing a few web sites using wordpress.com
what are the pros and cons of registering my domain and mapping with wordpress (the $15/yr option) vs. buying a domain from another registrar and paying wordpress for mapping only?
i am a mac user.
please advise. thanks ;)

I don’t think Mac or no Mac matters here, but I’m a PC user, so I wouldn’t know. I also don’t how which registrar WordPress is using and how easy their mapping process is and how easy it is to move your domain from WordPress, should you so wish later, but I assume that most registrars have more or less the same setup. In fact, the only pro I am seeing is the price. I don’t know any reliable registrar who does it for $5 only, maybe someone else does? If you already own a domain registered with a different registrar they may have special deals on registering new domains, so IMO it comes down to price and convenience. If you don’t own a domain, I’d go for WordPress as my registrar.

i’m new to all this tech talk and have been reading up on pros and cons, and i think i read somewhere that it’s bad to have the same host/server and registrar…? is that right? why?

It’s cheaper and faster to go through WP.com. Essentially you’re paying $5 a year for the name itself that way.

also, what if i have domain registered elsewhere? can i transfer it to wordpress? hpw much does that cost? pros and cons? thank you!!

I haven’t done it but I have never heard of WP.com giving anyone any trouble later when they did it. You do have to wait 60 days before moving it, but that’s the law.
