Domain registration renewal without mapping?

    Hello WordPress!

    It’s that time of year: time for me to renew my domain that I have registered through wordpress.com.

    It appears on my upgrades page that I must pay for both domain registration renewal AND domain mapping at the same time. Is it possible just to renew my registration and not to map the domain to wordpress?

    I would like register my domain with wordpress.com, but host it elsewhere. I see that this is possible, so I am just a little unclear why I still need to (pay to) map the domain to a wordpress.com blog.
