domain registry

I just registered with WordPress and don’t even know how to navigate, much less how to put it all together. I guess I’ve discovered my first question. I have a domain already established at GoDaddy, but have never used it for anything. I am so enthused to get started with a blog, but pretty clueless. Can someone summarize the pros and cons of moving my domain?

Hi There,
I am including a link to a thread where one of the staff members answered this question:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/whether-to-transfer-or-map-domain-name/
Hope this helps.

Hi les407,
An existing domain can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com.
With mapping, the domain would remain registered with GoDaddy and this upgrade creates a connection between the domain and WordPress.com. The domain will still need to renewed through GoDaddy each year in addition to your WordPress.com plan:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
Transferring the domain to WordPress.com means it will be registered and renewed through us each year. This option is better if you want to manage the site and domain through one account:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Custom domains are a feature of paid plans, so you would need to upgrade for either option.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the thread @tifanne83 linked to :)
