Domain Renewal

A friend of mine bought a domain for us through WordPress and we’ve been using that until around a week ago. It expired and we’re now trying to renew it, but we do not necessarily require a Premium Plan. We’re just looking to renew our old domain. Is there an option that will allow us to do so, or are we required to purchase the Premium or Business plan?

The issue is that the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from is not the owner of that upgrade.
Typically this happens because you ended up with a second WordPress.com user account at some point and THAT account is the one that was used to purchase the upgrade. You will need to log into that second account in order to renew the upgrade.

Does that mean I am unable to purchase a new plan and register with the domain armyofclubpenguin.com ?

You will not be able to purchase armyofclubpenguin.com until it works its way through the expiration process:
Your better bet would be to see if the friend could help you renew it.
