Domain renewal

  Hello,

  My domain expired today and I need some help figuring out how to renew it. The problem I have may be somewhat unique; the original user who paid for the domain is no longer affiliated with my site. From the looks of it, I need to contact this user to renew the domain, but since he is no longer with our organization, that cannot be done. How can I go about renewing the domain without this user?

  Hey ph2blog! Quite an interesting situation. I think you should get him to transfer the domain to you all. You can find how to do that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

  Hi there,

  First, what is the domain? I need to know that to give you the most accurate advice.

  The current owner will need to transfer ownership of the domain to you in order to allow you to manage it. Domain ownership is quite regulated, and transfer require email confirmation from both the old and new owner, so it’s not something we can do without the current owner’s involvement.

  Thank you both for the help. I have contacted the current owner and I hope we can arrange a transfer.

  That being said, if we cannot arrange a transfer, the domain explanation website seems to indicate that the domain is eventually released at some unknown time in the future. Is there a better way to track when it is fully released and up for purchase again? How much can I anticipate the cost being to repurchase upon release?

  Domain expiration takes around 90 days, but there’s no guarantee that the domain will be released after that time. The registrar can potentially sell the domain at private auction during the redemption period, and there’s always the risk that someone has the domain on back order somewhere, in which case it will be registered to their name the moment it’s released.

  As I said above, if you can give me the domain I’ll be able to give you a more accurate answer. The current owner is the only person who can transfer ownership of the domain, but we might be able to help you renew it if they don’t get back to you before the domain goes into redemption at about 18 days after expiration.
