Domain renewal

Was not aware my domain expired…thought on auto renewal and now find in redemption faze. (?) Is this something only with wordpress, a way of making more money of people? When my husband lost a domain he simply called Godaddy and was able to renew. Guess I should have purchased my domain through GoDaddy.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Once the domain expires, it goes into a grace period for about 10 days to two weeks in that time your domain can be renewed at regular price.
Once grace period gets over your domain enters the redemption period were to gain access to that domain you need to pay extra $80 which a redemption fee.

    Still

I have added “modlook” tag for the staff assistance. You will get a reply soon from the staff.

  • Hi there,

This is not something we devised just to make extra money. The redemption fee is standard practice for domain registrars.

When a domain expires it takes about two to three weeks to enter into redemption. If you have contacted before that we could have restored your domain at its regular price.

Please let me know if you want me to resend the payment request so that we can proceed with the domain recovery.

    Hi there,

Not devised to make more money (?) Of course it is, it’s business. Standard? Possibly, but with whom? As stated, same experience with Godaddy- Called and they renewed the expired domain at regular cost. Different practices for long term customers, maybe? IDC.

Yes, I would like to aquire the domain, as I’ve had it for years, receive daily traffic on it, and did not even realize expired until too late.
Unfortunately, I can not bring myself to pay an additional $80 above the normal cost. That’s just crazy to me…your standard or not.

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

We no longer control this domain. 43 days after it expired it was returned to the registry that controls it, and it went into redemption. The $80 fee is what we have to pay the registry to get the domain back under our control so we will be able to renew it and return it to your account. We do not make any money out of that fee.

The reason your husband could recover another domain without paying extra is most likely because he contacted them while the domain was still in the grace period – the 6-week period after expiration where the domain was still in GoDadddy’s control. Had he contacted them after the domain went into redemption, he would also have had to pay extra, as GoDaddy would also have had to pay this fee to the registry.

I know this is frustrating, but we sent multiple reminder emails starting as soon as 60 days before the domain expired on 17 September, and you had more than 40 days after it expired to still renew it at the regular price before it went into redemption on 30 October. But now it is in redemption and the redemption fee is required in order to get the domain back for you.

If you don’t want to pay the redemption fee to get it back, you can wait another week or two until the registry deletes the domain. Once this happens, you will hopefully be able to register it again as a new domain, at the regular cost. But there is a very real risk that someone else will register it as soon as it becomes available again. Should this happen, you will lose the domain completely.
