Domain renewal problem

We need to renew our business domain and WordPress is saying it can only be done by the administrator that first set up the wordpress website and who has not worked for us for nearly 5 years. I know I was able to renew last year, so I’m not sure what’s going on. Any help would be much appreciated as the domain is already expired (since, I’m assuming, the reminder about the expiration also got sent to the former employee…)

Can you please provide the domain name in question?
All upgrades on WordPress.com can only be renewed by the upgrade owner. You are correct that in the past it was possible for other users on a site to renew upgrades they don’t own, but that caused problems exactly like this one, where a user could renew a domain but then not be able to make any changes to the domain settings as they don’t actually own it. We changed this about a year ago.
If you can tell me the domain I can tell you its current status, but only the username who owns the domain will be able to renew it, recover it from redemption if needed, or otherwise manage the upgrade. If you know who that person is I suggest you contact them and ask them to post here, then they can authorise us to transfer the domain to another user on the site.
Keep in mind that sites themselves also have owners – the username who created the site. If this site is owned by the same user they are the only person who can transfer ownership of the site itself to another user. We do not transfer site ownership without the current owner’s consent under any circumstances.

The domain is mizzouhillel.com, the person you all have listed as able to renew says she has sent a message to find out how to transfer to me.

Right, that domain expired two days ago, so there are still two weeks to renew that domain before a late renewal fee will be charged.
I see both the domain and the site belongs to the username, askforlask
If that user can reply here I can transfer the domain to another account on the site. Just tell me which one. Or otherwise they can transfer the site along with the domain to another user on the account by following the instructions here:

askforlask said she has been in touch with WordPress and that the site and domain should be transferred, but I still don’t have the option to renew. It is problematic that our non-profit has not had a website for the past two/three days.

Because your site has a domain attached to it we have a few verification steps we need to follow before the transfer can take place, but we did receive the transfer request and have replied to get the process started. The current owner just needs to reply to our email and we can finalise the process. You should also receive an email once we complete the transfer.
Once @askforlask replies to our email, ask her to please post here as well, and I can help speed up the process a bit.

Askforlask has replied to the confirmation email, I still do not seem to have the ability to renew. Anything you can do to check on this/speed up the process would be greatly appreciated so we can renew before it becomes more difficult and expensive and so we can have a website again.

She only replied to that email yesterday, late afternoon/evening on a Sunday. The transfer process needs to be completed manually, and given the time she confirmed no one has seen that email yet.
I have completed the transfer and the site and domain now belongs to you. You can now renew the domain from the Purchases page.

Please note that you also need to update the contact information for the domain to your own to ensure that you will receive notifications about the domain. That information appears on a public database for all domains.
If you don’t want that information to be publicly visible you can add the Private Registration upgrade to your domain (askforlask did not own that upgrade). Refusing to update the contact information or providing false information will result in your domain being suspended by our registrar.
